The Lost Prince by Julie Kagawa

The Lost Prince (The Iron Fey: Call of the Forgotten, #1)The Lost Prince by Julie Kagawa

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Let me start by saying this is a solid 3.5 star review, and thanking NetGalley and Harlequin Teen for allowing me to read and review this title!
This must be a first for me, giving a Julie Kagawa book less than 4 stars, even though it's only a measly half star less. I don't really know what happened, but this book seemed a bit lacking for me. I'll be the first to admit that it may have been the effect of too much anticipation.
Ethan has grown up and is living in constant fear of the Fey, but hey, can you blame him? He has been seriously traumatized and lost his beloved older sister to them. He has become a victim of circumstance and a serious bad boy. After an encounter with some random Fey leaves his school library more than a bit charred, he changed schools. Being a new kid is never fun, especially if you happen to see an invisible world of scary pranksters running around terrorizing people.
Ethan is determined to be detached from the people around him but it becomes difficult when they are equally determined to be let in.
Herein lies some of my problems. Ethan is angry and cruel to those around him because he hates the Fey so much, but he immediately helps one. Not that I would fault any regular guy for wanting to stand up for someone being hazed, but not Ethan! If Ethan really hates the Fey as much as he says he does, he wouldn't get involved. Yet he does get involved and manages to even make this half breed a friend of sorts. So when his friend goes missing and Ethan is paid a visit from a freaky Fey that he has never seen before, he immediately becomes invested in finding out what is going on in the Fey world. Did I mention that he is being semi-stalked by a perky reporter chick? Another problem I had with this book was that Kenzie wasn't really present (even though she was there, but always in the background and usually quietly) much of the time and I didn't get emotionally invested in her or her plight.
You may remember the freaky Fey from The Iron Knight, they are called the Forgotten. Anyways, the Forgotten have discovered that by draining the glamour of Fey and half breeds that they can gain a tighter foothold in the world and manage to stick around and not fade. So Ethan manages to enter the never-never and find Meghan to plead for help in this matter. Meghan's duty is to her court though and so Ethan along with Kieran, a Fey that is discovered to be Meghan's son and Ethan's nephew, and Kenzie set off to fight these Forgotten by themselves.
If we learned anything from the first four books in The Iron Fey series, it's that nothing is as it seems and certainly nothing is ever easy in the Fey world!
I would recommend this book to fans of the series just for the simple fact that it's a continuation and if you are anything like me, you always wonder what happens after a story has ended, especially one that was so well written that it has become real in all the hearts of it's fans.
P.S. The book really picks up and gets much better by the end. I will definitely be reading the next book as well!
